The venerable 4Runner is one of the most capable body-on-frame SUVs left on the planet. It’s also as old as the hills in its current and 5th generation, marking twelve years without a redesign. So, instead of going forward, the brand is going backward by making a retro-licious version to celebrate the model’s 40th anniversary. The biggest change to the 40th Anniversary Edition seems to be the red, orange, and yellow stripes that come from older Toyota Racing Development vehicles. Other changes include vivid 17-inch bronze wheels, a body-colored “Heritage” grille, bronze stitching inside, and special badging denoting the special edition. The new trim level should be available later this year. For those wanting old-school off-road toughness combined with a vintage look should jump on it before the 4Runner gets totally reworked.
