Everyone knows that nostalgia is a huge factor in the price things sell for at auction. But we’re willing to bet no one would have predicted that a sealed copy of Super Mario 64 would smash the previous record held by The Legend of Zelda by almost twice as much. We’re not talking about a couple thousand dollars either, we’re talking about Ferrari money. The Legend of Zelda cartridge held the record of $870,000 up until last Sunday when the unopened Super Mario 64 cartridge brought in $1.56 Million when the gavel dropped. That’s right, a sealed copy of the favorite video game from your youth–one of the video games that aged surprisingly well, for the record–fetched over one-and-a-half million dollars at auction. The cultural significance of this particular game cannot be understated–incredible story, Mario franchise, the plumber’s first time in 3D, incredible replayability, piece of history, etc., etc.–but knowing the current market value kind of makes us want to go back in time 25 years and prevent our super excited, younger selves from ever opening it in the first place.
