The modern gas station has everything from pork rinds to Pinot Noir, but they’re certainly not nearly as interesting as the ones that invoke our road-tripping sense of nostalgia. Sightings of the red neon Mobil Pegasus and the Texaco star bring back memories of endless roads, circus peanuts, and those iconic analog gas pumps that delivered gallon after gallon of leaded fuel. All this and more is covered by the new It’s a Gas! photo book that includes full-color images of unique gas stations around the world, ranging from old school to new old school. The range of gas stations diverges from the conventional to the truly one-off like a converted residence and even shows us precious black-and-white shots of the re-fueling heyday. The preface of the 240-page book has been penned by none other than car aficionado and late night icon Jay Leno. Most importantly, It’s a Gas! brings us slices of the motoring past and present that will likely disappear someday, only to be replaced by EV charging stations that sadly probably won’t sell pine tree air fresheners.
