Sprint-Racer-6

Most people will never have the chance to ride a concept motorcycle or get to test drive any of the custom builds that hit auctions for tens (or hundreds) of thousands of dollars. But that doesn’t make them any less fun to look at. After all, how can people know the limits of moto design if the boundaries aren’t pushed? The first month of 2023 saw a number of designs that caught the Cool Material team’s eye. These were our favorite motorcycles that had us talking in January 2023, from a twin-jet motorcycle to electric super bikes to a foldable suitcase-size moped.

Bob Maddox’s Twin-Jet Motorcycle

The Bob Maddox pulsejet-powered twin-jet motorcycle is a true marvel of engineering and a testament to the limits of two-wheeled innovation. It has a sleek, red board track-style design and stainless steel pulse jets capable of producing 250 pounds of thrust for a level of power that's truly unmatched in the motorcycle world. This is not a machine for the faint of heart, or for those looking to keep anything close to a low profile. It's a work of art that pushes the boundaries of what a motorcycle can be, and is obviously not intended for street use. The auction for this one-of-a-kind machine is a unique opportunity for motorcycle enthusiasts to own a piece of history and truly experience the thrill of riding on the cutting edge.

Kawasaki KZ250 Sprint Racer

Every custom build has its own quirks, but this customized Kawasaki KZ250 dirt bike is in a league of its own. The minimalist sprint racer was built by Valen Zhou and some of the parts that are typically in the "essential" category (a bicycle seat instead of anything resembling comfortable to sit on, for example). It has custom suspension, an aero-disc wheel in front, and low-slung drop down bars. Instead of a classic fuel tank, there's an upside-down water bottle behind the seat post.

ICOMA Tatamel e-Bike

While not technically a motorcycle, the electric ICOMA Tatamel moped deserves mention for just how much it packs into a small space. It only weighs 110 pounds, with a top speed of under 25 mph, an 18.6 mile range, and a 220 pound max load. But most impressively, it folds up into a tidy little suitcase and can hit full charge off a standard outlet in three hours. It won an Innovation award in the Vehicle Tech and Advanced Mobility category at CES, and the brand is hoping to sell models by this spring.

Harley-Davidson Sportster XLR 883 TT Racer

Only a few hundred Sportster XLR 883 TT Racers were ever made, and this one recently went unsold at auction. The bikes were originally made for the high-speed "Tourist Trophy" (or simply "TT") races, and are definitely not street legal with its super light frame, like of lights, and zero-frills in order to reduce weight and increase speed (there are even strategically drilled holes to the cut weight down to 355 pounds).
